FRCR 2B: Long Cases

The long case component presents six complex multi-modality cases. Here is what you need to know to pass.

Section 2

Long Cases

My take on the long cases is this — it is very passable.

Interestingly this is the only component that actually tests us on our day to day working as a radiology trainee. The advice for this part of the exam is fairly standard:

  1. Make sure you finish the exam
  2. Keep your answers short and structured
  3. Practise on the RCR platform

The most common reasons for failing are not finishing the exam and making significant errors on two or more cases.

A number of resources offer extensive long case practice and this has to be a personal decision. Revising for it is harder than it sounds because cases shown in the oral exam can also appear in the long cases. My personal feeling is that some practice is necessary — three or four long case packets at most, which is something offered on most courses.

A harsh thing to say perhaps — but if you failed because you are missing significant findings, more practice is the answer. Come back, do the work and sit the exam again.
